El Tunel, Havana, Cuba KipBrundage2017
With the utmost confidence, I can say there is no more accessible place to take interesting photographs than Cuba and, in particular, Havana, Cuba. Firstly, Cubans are open to being photographed. Secondly, the textures and colors are from an evocatively Cuban pallet, and the environment is vibrant and energetic. So with that said, bring whatever digital camera you have that you either don’t know how to use or wish to learn how to use better. This challenge runs the gamut from cell phones to Hasselblads. It isn’t the camera; it’s you (your vision and technique), the subject matter (this is where Havana comes in), and your willingness to explore what you wish to capture instantly and forever. Combining these three elements will make your photographs memorable and make you a better photographer, and Havana is a perfect place to start.
Every morning and afternoon, we dip into the visual “Ajiaco” (a Cuban stew) to capture images that stir you into action. Then, in the heat of the middle of the day, we will process, edit and review our pictures. We will celebrate our successes, plan counterattacks for our near misses, and learn from our mistakes. We will guide you through composing, capturing, processing, and presenting your images. You must bring a camera, a laptop/tablet with the appropriate software, and a willingness to explore Havana, particularly with your camera. The EyeCuba staff will be with you every step of your journey, whether on the street or in the classroom.
I am Kip Brundage, and I have been teaching photography to people like you since 1979, and I have been developing and leading trips to Cuba since 2009. While I lead many trips with and for very advanced photographers, I relish the groups learning the basics of photography and exploring their vision. The learning curve is steep, exciting, and contagious as the proverbial “light” comes on, and they start having success discovering their photographic statements. I find these groups very important for my growth, and they keep me fresh and remind me how mistakes can be magical. Join us in Havana for a week and return home with the pictures to prove it!
